Help Still Wanted!
We have a really incredible team here at the Starry Expanse Project. Our artists are talented, our developers dedicated. Even the guy who runs the blog is alright!
What’s more, we’re always looking to expand our wonderful team. If you’re interested in joining up with us, there are definitely areas where we could use the help. Particularly:
- Developers, particularly those with Unreal Engine experience
- 3D Artists, particularly those interested in our camera matching process.
and
If you fit one of those descriptions, or if you have some other talent that you think would benefit our project, please please please do not hesitate to get in touch with us! It’s also worth noting that if you’ve previously applied to join, don’t be afraid to say hello again. We’re much better equipped now to handle a large team than we were in the past.
So come one, come all! We can’t wait to meet you.

While the prospect of helping to recreate the best game of all time is compelling, I have no real relevant qualifications or experience. I can hardly find time to play video games, let alone create them. I do have a strong desire to play around with unreal 4 to try my hand at making a small video game. If I ever find the time to do that, and I turn out to be some kind of unreal 4 wizard, then maybe I would have something to offer to the team.
I do mechanical design with SolidWorks for a living, so I am familiar with its parametric paradigm for 3D modeling, but I would imagine whatever y’all are using is totally different. What are y’all using to create the 3D geometry, by the way?

We use mostly Maya and Zbrush, with a smattering of 3DS And other programs here and there.

I’d like to help, as I do have some experience with 3D, but I only have/know Blender and last I checked you only allowed one specific program (Maya? 3ds max? not sure anymore).
However I do have some experience with Unreal. Do you use blueprints or C++? I’m working on setting up a portfolio right now, I’ll send it your way when I can.

We primarily use Maya for modeling, and a combination of C++ and blueprints for development. Please do send us an email!

Definitely would be interested with helping. I do have some experience programming, and creating text adventure games (ALA Zork, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, etc.) using Inform 7, but unfortunately no real experience with Unreal. I may look into learning it though!

How do you get the initial camera angles? My guess is that you set the game image as a background for each camera, and then place the empties accordingly, but do you just estimate the camera positions?

Wow, I found an incredibly detailed answer to my question here:

You guys are like reconstruction archaeologists!
